The UK's unpredictable weather is the biggest enemy of your home's exterior paintwork. Rain, frost, UV exposure and temperature swings all take their toll. Choosing the right exterior paint โ and applying it correctly โ can mean the difference between a finish that lasts 3 years and one that lasts 10.
As professional painters who've worked on hundreds of exterior projects across South Yorkshire, we've tested and used virtually every brand on the market. Here's our honest guide to the best exterior paints for UK conditions.
Best Masonry Paints for UK Weather
For brick and rendered walls, we consistently recommend Dulux Weathershield and Sandtex Ultra Smooth. Both offer excellent adhesion, flexibility (to cope with thermal expansion), and resistance to rain, frost and algae growth.
Dulux Weathershield is our go-to for most South Yorkshire properties. It's self-priming on previously painted surfaces, dries quickly between coats, and comes in a wide range of colours. For rough or textured render, Sandtex's thicker formula provides better coverage.
Best Wood Paints for Doors, Windows & Fascias
For exterior woodwork, we recommend Dulux Weathershield Exterior Gloss or Johnstone's Exterior Gloss. Both provide a hard-wearing, weather-resistant finish that resists cracking and peeling. For a more modern satin finish, Farrow & Ball Exterior Eggshell is superb but at a premium price.
Wood preservatives and stains like Sadolin or Sikkens are ideal for natural timber features like fences, gates and garden structures. They penetrate the wood rather than sitting on top, providing protection from within.
When to Paint Exteriors in the UK
Timing is crucial for exterior painting in South Yorkshire. Aim for dry periods between April and October when temperatures are consistently above 10ยฐC. Avoid painting in direct sunlight, high winds, or when rain is forecast within 24 hours.
At MJ Professional Decorators, we monitor weather forecasts carefully and will always reschedule rather than risk applying paint in poor conditions. That's part of doing the job properly.
How Much Paint Do You Need?
A typical semi-detached house exterior requires 10-15 litres of masonry paint for two coats. Factor in primer if the surface is bare or patchy. We always apply two full coats for maximum durability and coverage โ cutting corners here will cost you in the long run.
