The secret to a flawless paint finish isn't the paint itself โ it's the preparation. As professional painters and decorators with over 25 years of experience, we can tell you that proper wall preparation makes the difference between an amateur finish and a professional one.
Step 1: Clear and Clean
Start by removing all furniture, fixtures and fittings from the area. Remove any old wallpaper using a steam stripper and scraper. Wash walls with sugar soap to remove grease, dirt and dust โ this ensures the paint adheres properly.
Step 2: Repair and Fill
Inspect every wall surface for cracks, holes, dents and imperfections. Fill small holes with a quality filler and larger cracks with flexible filler. For significant damage, you may need plaster repairs โ this is where professional experience really counts.
Once filler is dry, sand everything smooth with fine-grit sandpaper. Run your hand over the surface โ it should feel completely smooth.
Step 3: Prime and Seal
Bare plaster, new filler patches and stained areas all need priming before painting. A good primer seals the surface, provides a uniform base for your topcoat, and prevents stains from bleeding through.
We use specialist stain-blocking primers for water stains, nicotine marks and any surface that might bleed through standard paint.
Why Professional Preparation Matters
Cutting corners on preparation always shows in the final result. At MJ Professional Decorators, we spend as much time on preparation as we do on painting โ because that's what our South Yorkshire customers expect and deserve.
